5 tips for living alone in Singapore

Living Alone in Singapore

1. It's all about locks

Singapore is known as one of the country with the lowest crime rate in the world but this does not mean you can forget about some basic safety measures around your house. Locking your doors is definitely inside your must-do-list every time you leave your house. Make sure the windows are locked too if you are staying at the lower floors.

2. Be aware of your surrounding

If you are not staying at those ulu places (re: out-of-nowhere area where people rarely passing by except for normal hours), make sure that the way to your house is safe especially around the odd hours (i.e. early morning or late night). Do not plug your ears by earphone and keep a watchful eyes of the surrounding for safety measures.

3. Know your local police number

The emergency number to contact police in Singapore is 999. If you need to call for an ambulance or fire, the number to contact is 995. Good things that we can rely on the police system in Singapore. Not like in some other countries (ahem, my home country, ahem).

4. Social media updates

Do not advertise on any of your social media platform (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, etc) that you are living alone. Or worse, advertise where you are living. It is not advisable to write details on when you are working late (e.g. work until late 11 today).

5. Do not invite strangers to your house

This is especially when you are staying in HDB flat (re: government subsidised housing) where there is no security on who can access the lift. Do keep a look out on who is knocking at your door. Most of the time, these random strangers may be marketer or those hired men asking for donation but we can't be too sure at times. A visit from government bodies e.g. HDB or PUB, etc will be initiated by a notification letter.
